Therapeutic Activities

Is your child having difficulty playing or participating in activities at home or school? Is their physical condition preventing them from fully participating in the life they love? At Southern Pediatric Therapy Clinic we understand how difficult it can be for a child to face the loss or restriction of strength or mobility.

Our first priority as a practice is to help children like yours access successful treatment methods that promote independence. One way we achieve this is through therapeutic activity.

If you are interested in learning more about the highly personalized treatment plans we offer, contact our pediatric therapy clinic today to schedule an appointment for your child.

How is therapeutic activity different from therapeutic exercise?

If you are familiar with occupational therapy, you may have heard the term “therapeutic exercise” before.

Though therapeutic exercise and therapeutic activity  certainly sound similar, there are important differences that separate these two rehabilitation methods.

The key thing to remember about therapeutic activity is that it uses dynamic activities to improve functional performance. Often, these dynamic activities mimic movements that are commonly performed in everyday life.

Alternatively, therapeutic exercise programs have patients perform singular physical movements. (Ex: tricep extensions)

What are the benefits of therapeutic activity?

Therapeutic activities can improve your child’s range of motion, strength, and ability to complete daily tasks.

Our skilled therapists are trained to uncover their specific functional needs. Once the cause of their difficulties is clear, we can develop personalized therapeutic activities to meet your child’s needs.

A few examples of therapeutic activities for children  include:

  1. Playing games to work on strengthening or range of motion
  2. Transferring, or moving between seated, standing, and lying positions.
  3. Running or jumping on a variety of surfaces
  4. Climbing stairs
  5. Catching and throwing balls or other objects.

When your child performs therapeutic activities under the care of a licensed provider, they will be positively conditioning their body. Therapeutic activities can strengthen muscles, improve joint health and mobility, help gain flexibility and coordination, and much more.

As your child’s treatment plan progresses, it should become much easier for them to navigate the physical demands of daily life.
