Fine Motor Coordination Training

If you’re a parent, the healthy development of your young child is likely your number one priority. Mastering fine motor skills, or the use of small muscles in our hands, fingers, wrists, and toes, is an extremely important step in your child’s development.

We use fine motor skills countless times each day, from brushing our teeth to holding objects in our hands. If it feels like your child is struggling with this skill set, it’s easy to become anxious or overwhelmed.

The good news is there are many ways you can improve your child’s fine motor skills with the help of an occupational therapist.

At Southern Pediatric Therapy Clinic in Picayune & Wiggins we are committed to helping your family, and equipping your child with the tools they need to fully participate in and enjoy life. If you believe your child would benefit from fine motor coordination training (FMCT) contact our clinic today to schedule an appointment with one of our passionate movement experts.

What can my child expect from fine motor coordination training?

Your child will likely undergo an evaluation during their initial consultation with an occupational therapist. This will help the occupational therapist see your child’s current fine motor skills and pinpoint what issues they may be having.

From there, your child’s occupational therapist will create an individualized treatment plan, designed to address your child’s exact needs. Their treatment plan may include a variety of exercises that focus on strength development, grasping, bilateral coordination, and hand-eye coordination.

You may also be asked to help your child perform their exercises and movement patterns at home, in between sessions. This will help your child progress through their treatment plan faster and achieve better results in the office.

Examples of the exercises that may be included in your child’s treatment plan include:

  • Bilateral activities such as coloring in simple shapes and playing with legos and blocks.
  • Activities that promote hand strength such as popping bubble wrap and playing with play dough.
  •  Playing catch with a light ball to help improve hand-eye coordination.
  • Cutting along lines and transferring stickers from a sticker book to help improve grasping skills.

Our occupational therapy team will also take into account a variety of conditions that may be affecting your child’s motor development. Our practice has experience treating children with neurological impairments, developmental coordination disorders, sensory processing difficulties, dyspraxia, and much more.
